BC Hydro received an overwhelming response to its recent request for renewable energy projects, with the goal of expanding B.C.’s clean electricity supply to meet increasing demand. Energy Minister Josie Osborne highlighted the importance of clean energy in powering homes, businesses, and industries, while supporting the province’s future energy needs. The call for renewable power, part of BC Hydro’s long-term energy strategy, seeks to secure more clean energy sources and ensure reliable electricity for B.C.’s growing population and economy.
BC Hydro issued a request for proposals to secure 3,000 gigawatt hours (GWh) of renewable energy per year. This first competitive power call in over 15 years attracted proposals for more than 9,000 GWh, with wind energy making up the majority of the submissions. Solar, biomass, and hydro projects were also proposed. BC Hydro will evaluate the projects, with contracts to be awarded by December 2024, and some projects could begin generating power by 2028.
B.C.’s well-established hydroelectric system provides a unique advantage in integrating intermittent renewable energy sources like wind and solar, offering a flexible backup during periods of low generation. The integration of more renewable energy is a key part of BC Hydro’s plan to maintain its clean electricity leadership in North America, where 98% of the province’s electricity already comes from renewable resources.
In addition to expanding renewable energy generation, BC Hydro is making significant investments in upgrading its transmission and distribution infrastructure. These upgrades are critical to ensuring that clean electricity reaches new homes, businesses, and industrial developments as demand for renewable energy continues to rise. The $36 billion capital plan includes substantial projects to improve capacity and reliability across the province, particularly in fast-growing regions like Vancouver.
With regular competitive calls for renewable energy every two years, BC Hydro aims to ensure that B.C. continues to meet its growing energy needs while maintaining affordable electricity rates. These initiatives are set to support the province’s clean energy goals and solidify its position as a leader in renewable energy production.
