Cogito Capital today reaffirmed its role as an official partner of SmartTO (Smart Mobility Applied Research and Testing-Technologies of Ontario) — a Regional Technology Development Site (RTDS) in York Region supported through the Ontario Vehicle Innovation Network (OVIN).
SmartTO, led by York University in partnership with Centennial College, supports startups and small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) by providing access to specialized research facilities, prototyping labs, testing environments and commercialization expertise. The initiative is part of Ontario’s broader strategy to accelerate innovation in automotive and smart mobility technologies.
The Government of Ontario recently announced expanded support for the province’s RTDS network, including nearly $70 million in total funding to establish and strengthen nine Regional Technology Development Sites across Ontario. As part of that investment, York Region received $2.5 million to enhance local automotive technology development capacity, enabling smaller companies to test, validate and prototype next-generation products.
York Region is home to a significant concentration of automotive parts manufacturers and mobility technology companies, making it a strategic hub within Ontario’s automotive supply chain and innovation ecosystem. The provincial investment reinforces the region’s role in supporting connected, autonomous and electric vehicle innovation while strengthening Ontario’s competitiveness in the global automotive sector.
